AI SEO agency
AI SEO that covers both halves: ranked and quoted.
An AI SEO agency optimises a site for two different systems at once: the ranked list Google has always produced, and the generated answer that assistants now produce on top of it. The foundations overlap, since both need a page a machine can fetch and parse, but the selection differs. Ranking rewards authority and relevance across a whole page, while citation rewards a short passage that answers one question completely on its own.
Why optimising for one is no longer enough
Around 80% of URLs cited by ChatGPT do not appear in Google’s top ten for the same query. Ranking and citation are different competitions decided by different criteria, so a site can be excellent at one and invisible in the other.
That is the practical case for doing both together. The engineering that makes a page fast, server-rendered and structured serves both systems, and the content work then differs: depth and internal linking for the ranked list, self-contained answers for the generated one.
What we usually find
The pattern repeats across almost every site we scan. The site is not penalised, it is unreadable.
- A CDN or firewall rule that turns away AI crawlers while letting Googlebot through.
- Content rendered only after JavaScript runs, so a crawler that does not execute scripts sees an empty shell.
- No structured data, so the engine has to infer what the business is and often gets it wrong.
- Answers buried below the fold, under a value proposition, in a form nothing can quote.
What it is worth, and who measured it
+8.4%
A 0.1 second improvement in load speed lifted retail conversion by 8.4% and average order value by 9.2%. Same traffic, same spend, more revenue.
These are findings from published research on the wider market, measured by the people named beside each one. They are not results we are promising you, and we do not have client results of our own to show yet, which we would rather say plainly than dress up.
Questions
What does an AI SEO agency do differently?
It optimises for citation as well as ranking. That means testing what your server actually serves an AI crawler, structuring content so a passage can be quoted standalone, and adding the structured data that tells a model what your business is, on top of ordinary technical SEO.
Is AI SEO just SEO with a new name?
The foundations are shared and the selection is not. Roughly 80% of URLs ChatGPT cites are not in Google’s top ten for the same query. If citation were a by-product of ranking, that number would be small.
