Why law firms are first in line
Every category is being reshaped by AI answers, but legal is the leading edge. When someone asks “is X legal in my state” or “can my landlord do Y,” the assistant almost always answers directly, and increasingly names its sources.
That is a threat and an opening. If your firm is the cited source in that answer, you are the authority the prospect remembers when they pick up the phone. If a competitor is, you never entered the conversation.
What actually gets a firm cited
The mechanics are the same as any AI-visibility work, applied to legal content:
Be readable by the machines
Confirm GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are not blocked at robots.txt or your CDN, and that pages render real HTML, not a JavaScript app the crawler sees as blank. This is the fast, unglamorous first win. Check yours here.
Answer the exact question, first
Assistants extract clean answers. A page titled for the real query (“Do you need a lawyer to contest a will in Texas?”) that opens with a direct, self-contained answer, then the nuance, is far more citable than a generic “estate litigation services” page.
Structure by jurisdiction
Law fragments by state and county, which is a gift: it lets you build a set of genuinely distinct, deeply-sourced pages. One per jurisdiction and question, that own a category of answers. This is the highest-leverage content play in legal, and it is exactly the kind of structured, primary-source content models love to cite.
Prove who is answering
E-E-A-T is not optional in a “your money or your life” field. Named attorney authorship, credentials, citations to statutes and cases, and clear review dates all signal to both Google and the assistants that the answer is trustworthy.
What to ignore
Be sceptical of anyone selling law firms an “llms.txt package” or a schema-only fix as the route into ChatGPT: the evidence does not support llms.txt as a citation lever, and thin schema underperforms. The durable work is authoritative, jurisdiction-specific answers on a technically clean site, plus the off-site reputation legal clients already research.
If you want to see where your firm currently stands, run the free scan: it reports whether the assistants can read your site today. If you want the citation and competitor picture for your practice areas written up, The Roadmap is $750 and comes off your first invoice if you go ahead.
