Google ranking and AI citation are different games
The most common misunderstanding we hear is “but we’re #1 on Google.” That is genuinely good, and almost unrelated to whether ChatGPT recommends you. Google ranks a page in a list; an assistant assembles an answer from a handful of sources it trusts and cites 2 to 7 of them. Different mechanics, different winners.
The seven reasons, and the fix for each
1. You are blocking the crawlers
If GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot get a 403, from robots.txt or your CDN: the assistant reads nothing. This is the single most common cause, and the easiest to fix. See is your website blocking ChatGPT for the two-minute check.
2. Your pages are blank without JavaScript
Many AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript. If your site is a client-rendered app that assembles content in the browser, the crawler sees an empty shell. Fix: server-render real HTML so the answer is in the first response. The same reason server-side rendering matters for Google’s crawl budget.
3. Your content is not shaped like an answer
Assistants extract, they do not read essays. A page that buries the answer under three paragraphs of brand story gives the model nothing clean to lift. Fix: lead each page with a direct, self-contained answer, use clear question-shaped headings, and add FAQ blocks. Structured, answer-first pages are measurably more likely to be cited.
4. Nobody else mentions you
This is the uncomfortable one. Models trust consensus, and most of that signal is off-site.
Fix: earn mentions on the sources AI leans on, industry press, review platforms (G2, Clutch, Yelp for local), and genuinely helpful answers in communities like Reddit, which is the single most-cited domain across AI platforms. This is slow, compounding work; it is also the highest-leverage lever there is.
5. Your information is stale
Freshness is a real ranking factor for retrieval, especially on Perplexity, which cites recently-updated pages far more often than old ones. Fix: keep your money pages current and dated; review them quarterly at minimum.
6. Your competitor is simply more citable
If a competitor publishes a clean, sourced, well-structured page answering the exact question, the model picks them. Fix: out-structure them. A more direct answer, real data with citations, and a page a machine can quote in one clean paragraph.
7. You are missing from the places AI cross-checks
For local and service businesses especially, assistants assemble “near me” answers from your Google Business Profile, consistent listings, and reviews, not just your website. Fix: an entity layer: complete, consistent profiles and LocalBusiness structured data so the model can confidently connect the dots.
